Central Research Question

How Can We Improve student experience at Iowa State University Dining and foster good health habits among students?

Background and Motivation

  1. Increasing Health Awareness: There is a growing concern among students about their health and nutrition. Many students are now seeking healthier food options and want access to detailed nutritional information to make informed choices.

  2. Lack of Transparency: Traditional food labels in the dining center might not always provide comprehensive nutritional data, making it challenging for students to track their calorie intake or identify potential allergens.

  3. Advancements in AR Technology: Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as a cutting-edge technology that has the potential to revolutionize various industries, including the food sector. Its ability to overlay digital information on real-world objects makes it an ideal tool for providing interactive food information.

Next Steps

Development of an Augmented Reality (AR) application designed to aid ISU students in making informed food choices while dining on campus.

  • The AR application utilizes smartphone cameras to scan food labels in the dining center, providing students with real-time access to comprehensive nutritional information.

  • Detailed information includes calorie counts, vitamin content, and other essential nutritional data, empowering students to maintain their diets and make healthier food choices.

  • The AR application promotes transparency, convenience, and accessibility, allowing students to easily access vital food information on-the-go.

  • By fostering an interactive approach to dining, the AR application encourages students to take control of their eating habits and align their food choices with their health and dietary goals.

  • The project's primary focus is on enhancing the overall dining experience for students by providing them with an innovative and technology-driven tool.

  • Through the AR application, students can easily track their food intake, ensuring they stay on track with their nutritional needs.

Key findings from the interviews…

We conducted interviews with a diverse group of 20 individuals, including freshmen, sophomores, and seniors at Iowa State University.

These interviews were conducted in the three main dining halls on campus.

A common issue emerged during our discussions: students face significant challenges in monitoring their calorie intake.

The main problem centers around the long queues that students often encounter when waiting to access their meals.

These extended wait times make it difficult for students to thoroughly examine and assess the nutritional content of the available food options.

As a result, many students find it challenging to maintain a consistent and accurate daily count of their calorie intake.

This challenge not only affects their ability to make informed dietary choices but also highlights the need for practical solutions to support healthier eating habits on campus.

The solution..

User Interaction

Software / Hardware

Future plan

  • We used Unity as our primary software for creating the augmented reality experience.

  • We utilized Vuforia to create the image recognition system that allows the app to recognize food labels.

  • We used Unity as our primary software for creating the augmented reality experience.

  • In terms of hardware we made use of a Macbook to create and render our prototype.

  • Users will be able to scan food labels using their phone's camera and view the information in augmented reality.

  • They can interact with the virtual content by moving the phone around to explore the details of the food label.

  • The information will be displayed in an easy-to-understand format, making it accessible to all students, regardless of their level of knowledge about nutrition.

Our future plan is to continue to develop and refine the app to provide students with more personalized and tailored information.

We plan to introduce this in the MyState application so it is more accessible to the students. In addition, we aim to collaborate with ISU Dining to expand the app's functionality to other areas of the dining experience, such as ordering and menu selection.

Thankyou :) Also, Remember to stay hydrated 🍉
